Forgotten, Not Gone: Single-Use Plastic Ban

Nearly four years after India’s landmark ban on single-use plastics came into force, enforcement remains uneven across states, with many banned items still freely available in markets and retail outlets. The gap between policy intent and implementation has frustrated industry stakeholders who have invested in compliant alternatives.

Manufacturers of biodegradable and reusable products argue that the uneven playing field, where banned items continue to be sold in certain regions, undermines their competitiveness. They are calling for stricter enforcement, standardised definitions, and a national monitoring framework.

Environmental groups, meanwhile, are pushing for the ban to be extended to more categories, including multi-layered flexible packaging. The government is reviewing the implementation status and is expected to announce enhanced enforcement measures and clearer guidelines for extended producer responsibility in the coming months.
