The rapid growth of India’s electric vehicle market is creating new and specialised demand for automotive coating systems tailored to the unique requirements of EVs, with paint manufacturers developing novel product solutions to address the different manufacturing processes, substrate materials, and performance requirements of electric mobility platforms. The EV transition represents one of the most significant opportunities for innovation in automotive coatings in decades.
Electric vehicles present distinct coating challenges compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The absence of an exhaust system changes the thermal management requirements for underbody coatings. The widespread use of lightweight materials including aluminium alloys and composites in EV bodies requires coating systems optimised for these substrates rather than traditional steel. The relationships established during the EV transition will shape the competitive landscape of Indian automotive coatings for decades.
