India Retail Inflation Hits 5.54% in September 2026

India’s retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September 2026 from 4.83% in August, driven mainly by food prices, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on October 12, 2026. Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index, jumped to 7.74% from 5.97% a month earlier.

CNBC reported that the print came in above estimates. A Reuters poll cited ahead of the release had expected 5.40%, so the September figure is above that forecast.

What Pushed India’s Retail Inflation Higher in September?

Food and beverages inflation stood at 7.36%, while personal care and miscellaneous goods and services rose 13.75% and restaurants and accommodation 9.36%. Onion prices rose 108.09% year on year, up from 48.78% in August, and silver jewellery was up 87.80%. Ginger rose 62.85%, garlic 54.62% and lemon 36.41%. Potato (-11.50%) and tomato (-8.62%) were cheaper than a year ago.

Transport inflation was 5.01%, and the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group was 2.74%. MoSPI’s release does not explain the onion price surge.

How Do Rural and Urban Inflation Compare?

Rural inflation was 6.08% against 4.88% in urban areas. Rural food inflation was 8.06% and urban food inflation 7.18%. Prices were collected from 1,407 urban markets and 1,465 villages across all states and union territories.

What Does It Mean for RBI Policy?

The data follows the Reserve Bank of India’s 25 basis point repo rate hike to 5.50% in the Monetary Policy Statement of October 7, 2026, when the stance changed from neutral to “calibrated tightening”. The RBI projected CPI inflation of 5.2% for 2026-27, with 6.0% in the October-December quarter and 5.7% in January-March. September’s 5.54% is already above the full-year average projection.

Wholesale inflation was higher still: the Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported WPI inflation of 11.39% in September, up from 9.9% in August, as Free Press Journal reported on October 14.

Market and Trade Reaction

Elevated crude prices remain a risk. HDFC Sky reported Brent near $105 a barrel on October 13, which keeps pressure on India’s import bill and the rupee. MoSPI’s release carried no analyst commentary, and a fuller market reaction to the CPI print was not available in the sources reviewed.

What Happens Next?

The next CPI release, for October, is due on November 12, 2026. September figures are provisional and may be revised. Watch food prices, particularly vegetables, crude oil and the rupee, which will shape the RBI’s next policy steps.
