Why Did the Sensex and Nifty Fall on 22 October?

Market reports cited rising crude prices on renewed Middle East supply fears after Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, including energy infrastructure, and wider geopolitical tension, including the US ordering the departure of some diplomatic personnel from Saudi Arabia. Brent rose above USD 111 and approached USD 112. Inflation worries also weighed: minutes of the RBI Monetary Policy Committee indicated that further rate hikes could be considered if inflationary pressure persists.

How Did the Broader Market and Sectors Perform?

The selling was sharper in mid and small caps. The midcap index fell about 0.87% and the smallcap index about 1.14%. Nifty Media fell more than 2%, and Nifty IT, FMCG and Energy each lost more than 1%, while Nifty Pharma and Nifty PSU Bank gained modestly.

Rupee, Crude and Global Cues

The rupee weakened about 0.4% to near 94.82 per US dollar, ending an eight-session gaining streak, as higher oil prices lifted dollar demand from importers. European markets were lower: Germany’s DAX fell 0.87%, the FTSE 100 fell 0.40% and France’s CAC 40 fell 1.27%. US equity futures also pointed lower, with Nasdaq 100 futures down 1.77%, linked in reports to concerns about AI spending and earnings.

What Do Analysts Say?
