From Sugarcane to Bioplastic: India’s First Industrial PLA Plant

India is set to commission its first industrial-scale polylactic acid (PLA) manufacturing facility, marking a historic milestone in the country’s transition to bio-based plastics. The plant, being developed with technical collaboration from European biopolymer specialists, will use sugarcane-derived lactic acid as its primary feedstock.

PLA is a fully compostable bioplastic widely used in packaging, food service ware, textiles, and medical devices. India’s vast sugarcane cultivation base gives it a significant feedstock cost advantage over countries reliant on corn or cassava.

The project is backed by the Department of Biotechnology and aligns with India’s circular economy vision. Once operational, the facility will reduce dependence on imported biopolymers, create new markets for sugarcane farmers, and position India as an emerging hub for sustainable plastics manufacturing in Asia.
