Quality Just Changed the Game: ISO and BIS Standards Reshape Competitive Barriers

April 2026 brought a meaningful tightening of quality expectations for paint manufacturers supplying to institutional and infrastructure markets. While large manufacturers routinely hold certifications, the practical and technical implications of standards compliance are reshaping competitive dynamics particularly for small and mid-sized Indian paint producers.

The ISO 12944 series which covers corrosion protection of steel structures by protective coating systems is the most commercially significant standard for Indian industrial and infrastructure coatings. The standard classifies corrosion environments from C1 to CX, specifying coating thickness, surface grade, and estimated service life for each. Manufacturers without third-party certification to ISO 12944 are increasingly excluded from government infrastructure projects, defence procurement, and industrial plant specifications.

India-Specific BIS IS 15489 specifies the ISO 13821 specification for low-VOC interior emulsion paints. Increasingly required in green building project specifications under GRIHA and IGBC certification systems. Manufacturers whose products comply with IS 15489 gain a qualification advantage in the growing institutional green building segment — government offices, and educational institutions.
