Defensive Strategy: Shifting Focus to Urban Premiumisation

Major Indian paint manufacturers are increasingly pivoting their commercial strategies toward urban premiumisation as a means of protecting and differentiating their offerings from price-driven competition. This strategic shift reflects a recognition that the mid-market decorative segment is becoming intensely competitive as new entrants deploy aggressive pricing and distribution strategies, making it more difficult for incumbents to earn attractive returns in the volume market.

Premium premiumisation as a defensive strategy involves several interconnected elements. Companies are investing in premium product development with new launches emphasising aesthetics, texture, durability, and environmental credentials rather than competing primarily on price. They are also expanding exclusive brand stores and franchise outlets in premium urban localities, creating controlled environments where consumers can experience the full depth of their product portfolios and receive personalised colour consultation services.

The premium urbanisation strategy also involves creating broader service ecosystems. Professional applicator networks trained in premium product application, digital tools for colour visualisation and project planning, and after-sales support programmes build a service experience that goes beyond the transactional relationship of commodity product supply and creates genuine loyalty among premium consumers who are willing to pay for the full package.

The medium-term outlook depends on whether competitive intensity moderates as new entrants establish their market positions and begin to focus on profitability rather than pure share growth. Most analysts expect some normalisation of trade terms and marketing spending intensity over the next 12 to 18 months, which would provide margin relief for all established players. However, the structural shift in the competitive landscape is unlikely to fully reverse, setting a new and higher cost baseline for competition in the Indian paint industry.
