Value Versus Volume: Asian Paint Companies Shift Toward Premium Performance Products

Across Asia, paint manufacturers are increasingly shifting away from volume-driven strategies and moving toward higher-value product categories. Industry leaders believe the future competitive advantage will not come from selling the most litres, but from selling coatings that offer superior performance, longer durability, and premium customer experience.

This transition is driven by multiple market forces. Consumers are demanding longer-lasting interior paints with improved stain resistance and washability. Infrastructure projects require higher-grade protective coatings capable of handling harsh environmental exposure. Industrial buyers are demanding compliance with low-VOC regulations and performance certifications.

As a result, manufacturers are investing in research and development to improve weather resistance, anti-microbial performance, heat reflective properties, and long-term durability. Premium products also allow companies to protect margins in an environment where raw material volatility continues to impact profitability.

In India, the value-versus-volume shift is clearly visible in metro markets, where premium emulsions and high-end exterior coatings are seeing faster growth than basic distempers. Tier two and tier three markets are also beginning to show gradual premiumisation as consumer awareness rises.

The shift has also changed marketing strategies. Companies are focusing on product storytelling, performance guarantees, and lifestyle-based positioning. Instead of selling “paint,” brands are selling long-term protection and premium living standards.

For industrial coatings, the shift is even more pronounced. Buyers increasingly demand high-performance coatings that reduce maintenance cycles and extend asset life, particularly in refineries, ports, power plants, and manufacturing hubs.

In the coming years, Asian paint manufacturers that fail to upgrade their product mix may struggle to sustain profitability. The market is moving toward performance-driven competition, where innovation will determine leadership.
