New Delhi, March 19, 2026 — Kyocera Hardcoating Technologies Europe has strengthened its coating technology bench with the appointment of Dr. Arunprabhu Sugumaran as Lead Engineer for Hardcoating Technologies, underlining the company’s focus on innovation and performance in advanced surface protection solutions.

The move reflects Kyocera’s commitment to enhancing its expertise in physical vapour deposition (PVD) and other cutting-edge coating technologies used to improve wear, corrosion and oxidation resistance across industrial and precision-component applications.

Expertise to Drive Next-Gen Coating Development

Dr. Sugumaran brings deep technical experience in thin-film PVD processes, including High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) and DC magnetron sputtering, accumulated during his doctoral research at the Materials and Engineering Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University. There he worked on advanced nanostructured PVD coatings for biomedical and industrial applications — expertise that aligns with Kyocera’s drive to push capabilities in ultra-durable coatings.

In his new role, Dr. Sugumaran will lead operational and developmental efforts within Kyocera’s coating division, focusing on optimising production efficiency while advancing research to tailor surface treatments to specific industrial needs.

Reinforcing Competitive Edge in Surface Engineering

PVD hardcoatings are critical in sectors such as aerospace, energy and high-performance machining, where surface integrity and component longevity are paramount. Kyocera’s existing HiPIMS coating chambers are capable of producing ultra-dense, high-hardness coatings with superior adhesion — essential for tooling that must withstand high temperatures and friction.

By deepening in-house expertise, Kyocera aims to bolster its service offerings in these segments while also exploring opportunities in decorative and functional coatings for automotive interiors and premium consumer products.

Timing and Strategic Footprint Expansion

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment as Kyocera Hardcoating Technologies Europe progresses its relocation to a new European headquarters in Fradley, Staffordshire, a move intended to support expanded operations and closer engagement with key industrial markets.

Hugh Welch, Managing Director of Kyocera Hardcoating Technologies Europe, said the company is “delighted” to bring Dr. Sugumaran on board, citing his specialist knowledge in next-generation PVD systems as an asset in enhancing engineering capabilities regionally.

As demand for advanced surface engineering solutions grows across global manufacturing, leadership additions like this position Kyocera to deepen its technological edge and better serve industries reliant on high-performance coatings.
