Maruti Suzuki September sales rose 24.44% year on year to 2,36,013 units, led by a 62% jump in SUV dispatches. The company said dealerships built up inventory ahead of the peak festive retail period, backed by strong demand for SUVs and entry-level cars.

The figures, reported on October 1, 2026, compare with 1,89,665 units dispatched in September 2025. Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches climbed 36.91% to 1,81,838 units from 1,32,820 units a year earlier, while exports added 44,219 units.

How Did SUVs Drive Maruti Suzuki September Sales?

Utility vehicle dispatches rose 62.05% to 78,911 units from 48,695 units in September 2025. Other passenger vehicles, which include hatchbacks and sedans, grew 24.02% to 91,887 units from 74,090 units. The SUV segment therefore delivered most of the incremental volume in the passenger vehicle line-up.

Light commercial vehicles also grew. Eeco van dispatches reached 11,040 units against 10,035 units a year ago, and Super Carry rose to 3,414 units from 2,891 units. Total domestic dispatches, including these vehicles, stood at 1,85,252 units versus 1,35,711 units.

What Does the Maruti Suzuki Result Mean for India’s Car Market?

Wholesale figures measure dispatches from the factory to dealers, not retail sales to customers. A build-up of dealer inventory ahead of the festive season signals that the carmaker expects strong retail demand in the coming weeks. The real test is how quickly showrooms convert that stock into registrations.

Supplies of badge-engineered models to Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Glanza and Baleno, fell 44.32% to 6,542 units from 11,750 units. Including those, combined domestic volumes reached 1,91,794 units against 1,47,461 units a year earlier. Exports grew a more modest 4.77% to 44,219 units from 42,204 units.

Market Reaction and Industry Response

Other manufacturers reported mixed September numbers. Autocar Professional reported that Honda Cars India wholesales fell 14% to 6,955 units, while Nissan Motor India’s cumulative dispatches crossed 10,000 units. Truck and tipper sales rose 34%, helped by mining demand and fleet modernisation.

The spread of results shows that the festive-season recovery is uneven across brands and segments, with SUV-heavy portfolios gaining the most.

What Happens Next?

Attention now shifts to October, when Maruti Suzuki’s dealer stock meets festive retail demand. Analysts and trade bodies will watch whether retail registrations keep pace with September’s wholesale growth, and whether export momentum improves from the 4.77% pace seen this month.
