New Delhi, March 19, 2026 — BASF Coatings, a major global supplier of automotive paint and surface technologies, has emphasised the growing strategic importance of automotive colour in shaping consumer preferences, vehicle performance and sustainability outcomes, ahead of International Colour Day on March 21. The company highlighted that automotive colour is evolving beyond pure aesthetics to influence brand identity, durability and environmental impact.

In a statement, BASF Coatings said it develops more than 1,300 colour concepts annually, with around 450 of these going into commercial production — reflecting both demand for differentiated vehicle finishes and the technical depth required to deliver them.

“Colour significantly influences how consumers connect with a vehicle, while also needing to meet high performance and durability standards,” said Mark Gutjahr, Global Head of Automotive Color Design at BASF Coatings, underscoring the intersection of emotional design and materials science in today’s automotive market.

Durability and Protection Beyond Aesthetics

BASF noted that a durable, sustainable automotive finish depends on the entire coating system — not just the visible basecoat. Pretreatment layers play a crucial role in corrosion protection and paint adhesion, forming the chemical foundation for long-term performance of colour systems on vehicles.

Meike Flöck, Head of Global Segment Management Automotive OEM Surface Treatment at BASF Coatings, highlighted the importance of this “invisible” layer in ensuring coatings withstand environmental stressors over a vehicle’s lifecycle.

Sustainability and Innovation in Colour Development

The company is also advancing sustainable materials in its colour portfolio. One example is the “Reverence Darkness” shade, created using recycled tyre materials as a carbon black source — a development that won the MATERIALICA Design and Technology Award 2025. Another project, “Colours with Renewable Pigments,” using bio-based waste streams, was named a finalist for the German Ecodesign Award 2025.

These initiatives reflect broader industry trends toward integrating recycled and bio-based input materials in coatings without compromising performance. Such sustainability efforts are increasingly valued by OEMs and consumers alike as regulatory and consumer expectations evolve.

Maintaining Colour Authenticity Through Lifecycle

Beyond original manufacturing, BASF Coatings emphasised that preserving colour authenticity across a vehicle’s life — including in refinish and repair operations — is critical. The company maintains a global database of millions of colour shades and precise mixing formulas to help body shops accurately match original colours, even years after a vehicle has been produced.

With rising focus on individualisation, durability and sustainability, BASF Coatings said automotive colour will continue to be a central design and performance consideration for manufacturers and aftermarket partners as the industry progresses through 2026 and beyond.
