The Indian paint and coatings industry is entering a new phase of sustainability transformation, moving beyond low-VOC claims toward genuine bio-based raw material innovation. Research and development teams across major paint manufacturers are increasingly exploring plant-derived ingredients such as neem oil, soybean oil, castor derivatives, and natural resins as partial substitutes for petroleum-based binders and additives.
For years, the industry’s sustainability focus was primarily centred on reducing solvent content. While this transition delivered measurable improvements, it did not fully address the deeper carbon footprint challenge. The new wave of innovation is aimed at replacing fossil-based chemistry at the raw material level.
Neem oil, known for its antimicrobial and insect-repellent properties, has gained attention for potential applications in interior paints, wood coatings, and hygiene coatings. Soybean oil-based alkyd resins and bio-polyols are also being tested as substitutes in coatings that require flexibility and adhesion performance.
However, bio-based chemistry comes with technical challenges. Natural raw materials often exhibit variability in composition, which can affect batch consistency and long-term performance. Additionally, achieving the same durability, gloss retention, and water resistance as petrochemical-based systems remains a major hurdle.
Industry experts believe that the commercial adoption of plant-derived chemistry will depend on balancing sustainability with cost and performance parity. Premium and niche segments are expected to adopt bio-based formulations first, while mass-market adoption will depend on scalable supply chains and competitive pricing.
The shift is also being driven by international procurement requirements. Export-oriented industrial coatings increasingly require sustainability reporting, carbon footprint disclosure, and renewable content certification.
The coatings market is therefore witnessing a fundamental shift: sustainability is no longer just about reducing emissions in manufacturing-it is about redesigning the chemical foundation of paint itself.
