AI investment in India from family offices and wealthy investors has risen by nearly 50% in 2026 to about $760 million, Bloomberg reported on the basis of Tracxn Technologies data. Business Today carried the report on 16 October 2026.

The money is going into AI start-ups as India’s ecosystem matures, with several well-known family offices now writing direct cheques instead of investing only through funds.

Which Family Offices Are Backing Indian AI Start-ups?

Premji Invest, the investment firm of Azim Premji, joined a $27 million round in June for Pramaana Labs, an AI verification platform founded by IIT Madras graduates. Its portfolio includes Databricks, Canva, Writer and Spotdraft.

Ranjan Pai’s family office, Claypond Capital, backed Emergent’s $130 million round in July and joined content start-up Flam’s $40 million round in September. QED Innovation Labs, associated with Kunal Shah, is also among the investors backing AI businesses.

How Big Is India’s AI Funding Compared With the US and China?

India’s AI ecosystem drew more than $15 billion in private investment between 2013 and 2025. Over the same period the US received $757 billion and China nearly $132 billion, which shows how far India’s private AI funding still trails the two leaders.

On the public side, the government’s IndiaAI Mission has a budget of ₹10,371 crore, focused on computing capacity, datasets and domestic AI models. Adani, Reliance and the Tata Group are investing in AI infrastructure, including data centres and semiconductor manufacturing.

Industry Reaction and Expert Commentary

Riddhiman Jain, head of investments at Waterfield Advisors, said many family offices and angel investors are “keen on investing directly” as the ecosystem matures, adding that AI needs patient capital, which remains scarce.

Anirudh Damani, managing partner at Artha Venture Fund, said India has a cost advantage in building software, AI applications and services for global companies.

What Happens Next?

The report does not give a forecast for the rest of 2026. The factors to watch are whether direct investing by family offices continues to grow and whether patient capital, which Jain described as scarce, becomes easier for AI founders to find.
