The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on an India-based network and a Turkey-based company for helping Iran, Reuters reported on November 4, 2026. The US sanctions on Indian firms target nine entities linked to Suniel Kumar Sharma of Chandigarh, accused of providing false flags and fake maritime certifications to sanctioned vessels carrying Iranian petroleum.
The action was taken by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under what the Trump administration calls “Operation Economic Outcast,” an effort to cut off Iran’s oil sales.
Who Was Sanctioned?
Designated individuals are Sharma, his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, also of Chandigarh, and two other unnamed Indian citizens who head two of the couple’s businesses. Nine entities connected to Sharma, including India-based firms used to set up fraudulent flagging registries, were also designated.
The Treasury said Sharma and Shahid allegedly posed as representatives of Guyana, Eswatini and Laos. Turkey-based Fugo Ground Services Inc was sanctioned for providing ground handling and other services to sanctioned Iranian airlines flying to Turkey: Iran Air Tour, Saha Airlines, Taban Airlines and Ata Airlines.
What Did the US Say?
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said: “We know where you are.” The Treasury also said Iran’s rial had hit new lows and domestic inflation was around 90%. OFAC issued a new industry alert on the sanctions risk of dealing with potentially false-flagged vessels.
Market and Trade Reaction
No Indian government or market reaction was found in the sources reviewed. Brett Erickson of Obsidian Risk Advisors said Washington appears “unwilling to take even the smallest step toward de-escalation.”
What Happens Next?
The US reimposed its blockade of Iranian ports on July 14 after a memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington broke down. Shipping and trade firms dealing with vessels of uncertain flag status now face the OFAC alert’s sanctions-risk warning.
